FOUNDATION UNIVERSITY

INSTITUTE OF YOUTH SPORTS
FOR PEACE (IYSPeace)

What is IYSPeace?

IYSPeace is the acronym for the Foundation University Institute of Youth Sports for Peace. It is "an
experiment in peace-building" through a purposeful creation of a culture of youth sports in the Province
of Negros Oriental and the Visayas region.

What inspired its establishment?

The establishment of IYSPeace is inspired by the following world-wide events and developments:

· The Call of the late Pope John Paul II to the Youth on World Day of Peace Celebration, January 2002:

"I am thinking particularly of you, dear young people, who experience in a special way the blessing of
life and have a duty not to waste it. In your schools and universities, in the work-place, in leisure and
sports, in all that you do, let yourselves be guided by this constant thought: peace within you and
peace around you, peace always, peace with everyone, peace for everyone."

· Convention on the Rights of the Child, 12 December 1989
Article 31- "…recognizes the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational
activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts." (Right
to Play)

· The International Charter of Physical Education and Sports , Nov. 21, 1978 which proclaims under
Article 1 that "the practice of physical education and sport is a fundamental right for all."

· UN Initiatives on Sports for Development and Peace:

In February 2002, United Nations created the Inter-Agency Task Force on Sport for Development and
Peace.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed 2005 to be the International Year for Sport and Physical
Education by its resolution 58/5 on "Sports as a means to promote education, health, development
and peace".

· Statement of United Nation Officials
Former UN Secretry-General Kofi Annan:
"The aim of the UN activities involving sports is not the creation of new sporting champions, and the
development of sports, but rather, the use of sports in broader development and peace-building
activities."
"Sport can play a role in improving the lives of individuals, not only individuals, I might add, but whole
communities. I am convinced that the time is right to build on that understanding, to encourage
governments, development agencies and communities to think how sport can be included more
systematically in the plans to help children, particularly those living in the midst of poverty, disease
and conflict. "
ź The Philippine Constitution, Article XIV, Section 19, "The State shall promote physical education
and encourage sports programs, league competitions and amateur sports…to foster self-discipline,
teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry."
What is the operational philosophy of IYSPeace?

The IYSPeace believes that Peace can be attained through a program of youth sports which operates
on five fundamental values:

· No Cheating
· No Violence
· No Substance Abuse
· Respect for Authority
· Universal brotherhood -- finds inspiration in this quote:

"Opponents in sports are not enemies…If anything; athletic opponents are brothers in a universal
sense. They compete in contests to express something about men in the face of
challenge…opponents reflect ultimately cooperation in the form of competition. Even the word
"compete" and "contest" imply a togetherness rather than separateness. Compete literally means to
"seek together," and contest, to "bear witness together!"

What are the vision and mission of IYSPeace?

The IYSPeace subscribes to the principle that physical education and sports are participatory
activities for all the children and youth of the land-regardless of gender, talent, religion and social
status. Providing opportunities for participation by the greatest number shall be the prioritizing factor in
the implementation of programs and projects, without diminishing the importance of sports talent
development in the quest for sporting excellence.

The IYSPeace-a center of sports education where the youth and their mentors learn and imbibe
knowledge, skills, values and ethics inherent in the practice of sports--creating communities of active,
vigorous and healthy sports participants in an environment of peace.

The IYSPeace-will provide theoretical and practical experiences in sports for the youth and their
physical education teachers, coaches, sports specialists, leaders and managers in Negros Oriental in
particular and Central Visayas in general to fulfill the Constitutional mandate and universal declaration
