Dumaguete Free Marathon Clinic Monthly Progression Training Month 7 World Food Day: Run for Food Theme: Investing in Agriculture for Food Security The Whole World Will Profit Rationale: World Food Day was proclaimed in 1979 by the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It is celebrated every year on the 16th of October to commemorate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945. The aim of the Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty and to encourage people worldwide to take action against hunger. In 1980, the General Assembly endorsed observance of the Day in consideration of the fact that "food is a requisite for human survival and well-being and a fundamental human necessity" (resolution 35/70 of 5 December 1980). A world free from hunger Our vision is a world without hunger and malnutrition - a world in which each and every person can be assured of having the food they need to be healthy and well-nourished. Our vision is a world which provides for and protects the welfare and human dignity of all of its people. A world in which all children can grow, learn and flourish, developing into healthy, active, caring members of society. We encourage you to join with teachers and students all over the world and participate in Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger. - from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) website (www.fao.org) Event's Component: In support of the World Food Day Campaign - a World Free from Hunger We intend to organize a campus fun run which will culminate to a Food and Agriculture Exhibits to be participated in by elementary and high school, college students, open to the community, the different academe in Dumaguete City, the out-of-school youth and all sectors of society in the observance of World Food Day, by: 1. Inaugurating an annual sporting event- the 1st James Eskridge "Run for Food" Campus Run. It is a 2-category sporting events, (a) the 3, 5, and 10-kilometer run challenge for elementary, high school, and collegiate level respectively, open to everybody who want to compete, and (b) the 3-kilometer recreational run/walk exclusive to students, faculty and staff, and to everybody for fitness and fun. 2. Initiating an annual community breakfast event - Food and Agriculture Exhibits. It is a community breakfast which will be highlighted with a Food and Agriculture Exhibits in the campus, right after the fun run where participants are encourage to bring packed meals "baon" or to buy from the displayed food prepared by the Home Economics Department to partake after the fun run, the guests and winners will be treated as well while gazing on the exhibits prepared by the Agriculture Department. Objectives: 1. To initiate an annual sporting event in celebration and in support of the FAO-UN World Food Day in its campaign embodied in the theme: Investing in Agriculture for Food Security-The Whole World Will Profit. 2. To organize a 3, 5, 10-kilometer campus run/walk which culminate to a community breakfast wherein the winners and finishers will be awarded-instead of monies and trophies- Food Coupon, Milled Rice-the symbol of Life and World Food Day certificates. Purpose: 1. To create awareness about UN FAO-World Food Day objectives. The activity is 7th Monthly Progression Training part of the on-going 9-Month Dumaguete Free Marathon Clinic which was launch last April 2006 by MDRCI-a Finisher's Preparation Run for the 8th Month Progression Training, the World Run Day: End Child Hunger, an international event on November 5, 2006 and the closing event on December 2006, Bus Run to Lake Balinsasayao: Tree Planting Incursion. 2. To encourage schools and university in Dumaguete City and in the Province of Oriental Negros to participate in the sports event; 3. To encourage all sports groups not limited to running - to participate as a team and different agencies to ensure participation of various sector; Organizational, Technical, Equipments, Medical and Facilities Requirements: 1. The organizational set-up and technical aspects will be managed by the Negros Athletics Association (NAA) and Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club, Inc. (MDRCI). And other facilities which may not be available will be prepared and provided by the City of Dumaguete through the City Tourism Council in coordination with the City Sports and Youth Development, City Traffic Management Office (TMO), Philippine National Police (PNP) and the General Services Office (GSO) for a safe venue and running course 2. The medical aspect will be provided by the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC NegOr) Negros Oriental Chapter and Schools Red Cross Youth Council for the medical - first aid. Promotional Aspects: The event will be promoted in one week through the community services of the media: newspaper, radio station and TV. |
