A 9-months marathon clinic patterned after the world-famous
Honolulu Marathon Clinic will be conducted by the Metro
Dumaguete Roadrunners Club, Inc. (MDRCI), every Sunday, at
six o'clock in the morning at the Rizal Boulevard. The clinic,
patterned after the world-famous Honolulu Marathon Clinic,
which trained thousands of people to run their first 42.195
kilometer marathon, and founded by world-renowned
cardiologist, Dr. Jack Scaff, Jr., aims to train runners who will
attempt to complete a 21-K half-marathon in November, or to
provide an opportunity to participate in an activity that will
improve the physical fitness of the participants. Regular
participation in the one-hour run regimen of the clinic will
also serve as a preventive measure to arrest the growing
incidence of "lifestyle diseases" like heart disease which is
now the number killer in the City.

"The marathon clinic is free of charge and everyone is invited
to join," said Cecilio D. Tayko, the President of MDRCI. Mayor
Agustin Perdices has manifested full support, City
Administrator; Engr. Dominador Dumalag issued a
memorandum enjoying all employees to join the program.
Likewise, the City Tourism Council, through is Chairman,
Councilor Chiquiting Sagarbarria, had made available the
facilities of Café Tourismo for the promotional campaign to be
undertaken by the MDRCI in promoting the half-marathon as
an international event.

In a letter addressed to Dr. Perry Mequi of Foundation
University, and who will serve as training consultant for the
clinic, Dr. Jack Scaff wrote:

"I applaud your efforts with your Marathon Clinic and if there
were anything we can do to support or assist you, we would be
delighted. Not only that, should one ever envision a 'sister
relationship' we would like to do that as well…if the schedule
works out, count on me in coming (to Dumaguete) with my wife
Donna at our own expense."

"Each training session will
consists of ---
Only 1-hour Run".

"The whole point in the
Marathon Clinic is not so
much to finish the full 42-k
distance. Participants have a
choice of just running or
walking a 5-k, 10-k or the half
21k marathon.

What is important is that one
participates to prevent
becoming part of the
statistics cited by Dr Ava Vios
in her data of rising
incidence of lifestyle disease
in the City" explained
Dr. Aparicio Mequi

Training groups will be led and paced by volunteers who have completed at least one marathon.
There are three groups at the clinic:
1. Beginners - sedentary types and people just starting their exercise programs.
