Dumaguete Marathon Clinic What's this project is all about? Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club, Inc. will launch a Marathon Clinic - the similar with the Honolulu Marathon Clinic founded by cardiologists Dr. Jack Schaf and Dr. John Wagner back in the early 70s. The purpose of the marathon clinic was to train people who wanted to complete running (walking is permitted and encourage) a full 42.195 kilometers, and its shorter versions - the 5-kilometer, 10-kilometer, and the 21-kilometer - half marathon. The objective of Dumaguete Marathon Clinic was to get sedentary people, and even cardiac patients, to participate in an easy, relaxed, and recreational form of physical activity to improve their fitness and enhance their capacity to ward off what is called lifestyles diseases. "Lifestyle diseases on the rise", Dumaguete City Health officer Dr. Ava Vios said that with 333 deaths last year, myocardial infraction or heart attack is now the number one killer in the city. She reported that"…cancer, heart disease or heart attack, hypertensive cardiovascular diseases, liver cirrhosis which are lifestyle diseases…" --- and not infectious diseases ---are now the leading causes of death in the City. -quoted by Dr. Aparicio Mequi (Metro Post-March 19, 2006)." "Lifestyle diseases are preventable through three preventive measures: proper nutrition and eating habits, participation in regular physical activity and effective stress management" -remarks Dr. A. Mequi. Dr. Aparicio "Perry" Mequi of Foundation University and the pioneer marathon clinic organizer in Quezon City leads the clinic as the training director and consultant. Dumaguete Marathon Clinic will follow the training protocol of the Honolulu Marathon Clinic. "To most people, the word -marathon is enough to discourage potential participants. However, I assure those who will join us that the training doesn't entail much physical effort. The training is so calibrated that the progression from one stage to a higher level will not be taxing to the point of total exhaustion", Dr. Mequi explained. "The whole point in the Marathon Clinic is not so much to finish the full 42-k distance. Participants have a choice of just running or walking a 5-k, 10-k or the half 21k marathon. What is important is that one participates to prevent becoming part of the statistics cited by Dr Ava Vios in her data of rising incidence of lifestyle disease in the City". |
